Why Daycare

More Than a Way to Pass the Day

The right daycare can give a social dog healthy activity, mental stimulation, and positive interaction while their family is at work, away from home, or managing a busy schedule.

Paw Retreat’s Salado daycare program combines active play with professional observation. Our team gets to know each dog’s communication style, energy, preferences, and limits so we can make thoughtful decisions about participation.

Indoor and Outdoor Play

Our large daycare area includes a climate-controlled indoor room that opens into an outdoor turf yard. Dogs can move between comfortable indoor space and outdoor activity as conditions and the daily plan allow.

During warm Texas weather, the doggie splash pad adds another way to cool down, play, and have fun with friends.

How Groups Work

Thoughtful Socialization

Good socialization is not simply putting many dogs in the same room. It requires attention to body language, energy, play style, and group dynamics.

Before joining daycare, every dog completes a temperament test. This helps our team understand how the dog responds to unfamiliar people, new surroundings, and potential playmates. We continue observing dogs after admission, because behavior and comfort can change over time.

The goal is a positive experience, not participation at any cost. If traditional group daycare is not the right fit, our team can discuss other Paw Retreat services and care options.

Eligibility

Daycare Requirements

To participate, dogs must:

  • Be current on Rabies, Bordetella, and Distemper/Parvo vaccinations

  • Pass Paw Retreat’s daycare temperament test

  • Be healthy enough for group activity

  • Be neutered if male and older than six months

Additional restrictions may apply based on behavior, health, or the safety of the group.

A Typical Day

What to Expect on a Daycare Day

Each day can vary based on attendance, weather, group needs, and individual energy levels. Dogs may enjoy periods of active play, social interaction, indoor or outdoor time, and appropriate breaks.

Our team watches for signs that a dog needs rest, space, or a change in activity. A successful daycare day should be enjoyable and manageable, not an endurance test.

An Honest Answer

Is Daycare Right for My Dog?

Often a good fit

Dogs who enjoy other dogs, benefit from regular activity, and are comfortable in a group setting.

Often not the right fit

Dogs who are highly fearful, easily overwhelmed, physically unable to participate safely, or uncomfortable around unfamiliar dogs.

There is no shame in a dog preferring a different kind of care. Our priority is finding an experience that helps the individual pet feel secure.
